Old Wive’s Tales & Gender Tests Predict Baby’s Sex

Old Wive’s Tales have always interested me in some sort of way. Not that I particularly believe in them, but every myth has to start somewhere, right? Like how being in the rain without a coat supposedly makes you sick or that cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis: both are old wive’s tales that are no where near true.

But today I want to focus on the part of old wive’s tales that try to predict the sex of the baby inside you! Reading some of them makes me wonder: could any of them be true? Or is it just a mere coincidence? I want to go through the most popular tales and let them predict the sex of baby OH!

Old Wives Tales

Old Wives Tales About Gender

Are you carrying low or high? If you’re carrying low, old wives say it’s a boy. High? It’s a girl. I personally think I’m carrying pretty low, but it’s still a bit early to tell.

Boy: 1 Girl: 0

Sleep Position? Legend has it, if you sleep on your right side, it’s a girl. But if you sleep on your left side, it’s a boy. I cannot get comfortable in any sleeping position besides my right side. I can’t lay on my back, left side, or stomach without feeling uncomfortable or crampy!

Boy: 1 Girl: 1

How do your hands feel? Soft hands mean you’re having a baby girl. On the other hand, (see what I did there?) dry hands say a baby boy. It’s the middle of Winter, so my hands are super dry!

Boy: 2 Girl: 1

Graceful or clumsy? If you’re fluttering like a ballerina – you may be having a girl! But if you’re stumbling over your feet – you could be having a boy! Ask everyone I know about how clumsy I’ve been lately… dropping glasses, falling down hills, tripping over my own feet on flat ground; I’m a mess!

Boy: 3 Girl: 1

Sweet or salty? Sugar and spice and everything nice, that’s what little girls are made of! Craving ice cream, chocolate, or candy means you’re having a girl. But if you want potato chips, pretzels, or popcorn.. you’re having a boy.

I’ve been craving both, but I seem to crave ice cream sundaes more than potato chips. (Weird, because I’m a big fan of snacks in general.) In fact, I think I’ve only bought one bag of potato chips since I found out that I’m pregnant. P.S) they were dill pickle flavored…

Boy: 3 Girl: 2

Get advice from a toddler. If you have a nephew or a friend’s little boy in your life, get some advice! If a toddler boy shows interest in your belly, chances are you’re having a baby girl. Although if he seems uninterested, it’s a boy.

This tale I’d never heard of before, however, my nephew is in LOVE with my belly. My mom was telling me how he’d pushed his belly out the other day and exclaimed he had a baby in his belly just like Auntie. He totally melts my heart!

Boy: 3 Girl: 3

Listen to your heart. Well, your baby’s heart I mean. If the heart beats more than 150 times per minutes, it’s a girl. Less than 150 beats means it’s a boy! At every appointment I’ve been too, baby OH’s heartbeat is usually in the 160s.

Boy: 3 Girl: 4

Touch your boobies! If your right breast is bigger than your left while pregnant, you are having a girl. Is the left is larger? It’s a boy.

Before I got pregnant, my left boob seemed to pick up the slack. But within the past couple weeks, I’ve noticed the right breast spilling out of my bra cup and getting way larger than the left.

Boy: 3 Girl: 5

Gender Prediction Tests

Another fun part of old wive’s tales comes the gender prediction tests! The Ring Test, the Pendulum test, the Chinese calendar test; it’s all there to play around with. And if I’m going to research a bunch of pink vs blue myths, I’m definitely going to play a couple of fun games, too!

The Ring Test

The ring test is where you tie a ring to a piece of string and hold it above your belly. (You should be lying down for this.) If the ring swings in a circle, you’re having a baby boy. However, if it swings back and forth, it’s a girl.

With the ring test, the ring swung in a clear circle over my belly: which points signs towards having a boy!

Boy: 4 Girl: 5

The Pendulum Test

The pendulum test is almost just like the ring test, except you swing it over the palm of your head instead of your belly. In this case, the results are opposite! If it swings back and forth: boy. In a circle: girl. Also, in this test you aren’t to use a ring! Some say to use a chain and a charm. I’m using a chain with a hamsa hand dangling from it.

In this test, mine swung in a circle again. Therefore, this means girl!

Boy: 4 Girl: 6

The Chinese & Mayan Calendar Test

Finally, we come to the last time: the Chinese and Mayan calendar test. In this test, you take the year you conceived and the age you conceived and peak at the numbers. If they’re both even or both odd: it’s a girl. However, if one number is even and one is odd: boy.

Boy: 5 Girl: 6

So, how accurate are these tales?

This week has been pretty crazy so far:

  • Sunday and Monday: I worked and cleaned up part of my room.
  • Tuesday: OH’s anatomy scan!
  • Wednesday: New Years Day.
  • Thursday (today) : Day one of pregnancy week 19!

What I really want to focus on, though, is Tuesday – Anatomy Scan Day.

I wanted to have a little bit of extra fun and compare my anatomy scan to the results of all of the old wive’s tales and see if they fall true. In conclusion, we see the final results. 5 points to Team Blue and 6 points to Team Pink!

Old Wive's Tales predict correctly! A little lady is joining us this year.

I’m excited to share we are having a little baby girl! And while I don’t entirely believe in all the old wive’s tales – it was interesting to see some of them that made sense in my life. Either way, I am beyond overwhelmed and full of love for all the things the future holds for my little sunflower.

Thank you for reading and sharing this journey with me.
